TWD Berry Galette

Where last weeks Blueberry Nectarine Pie was very sweet this weeks galette has only a small amount of sweetener.  The difference was noticable.  Of course the sweetness of the fruit largely effects how much sugar is needed.  I don't know if the recipe was faulty or if the raspberries and blueberries I used were super tart but the end result was very tart.  I served it with ice cream and that helped to sweeten it, but I was uninterested in eating any without ice cream.

What I did like about it was the size.  A full pie is too much for my family of 4 especially when you consider the fact that my kids don't like pie.  I think my future pies might always be the free-form shape of a galette.  I also really like the rustic beauty of the galette.  I always have a hard time crimping the edges of a pie and trying to make it look like an adult made it rather than a six year old made it.  With a galette if it is sloppy it is called rustic!

If you would like to check out the recipe you can find it in Baking with Julia or at our host blogs this week   The Kitchen Lioness and Tomato Thymes in the Kitchen.

  1. I love that this is one of those blank canvas recipes - so many possibilities! I also agree with you that it's nice to have a finished project that's supposed to look a little rough around the edges. So much less pressure! :)

  2. I'm a new cheerleader for the Galette! Love the free form, rustic look. I added a bit more sugar I think it helped, they were delicious.

  3. Your galette looks delicious!
I had the same "tart problem" with the galette I made with mixed berries.
To the second one, I've added a nectarine or two to the mixed berries and it was muuuuch better!

  4. This was the perfect amount of dessert for our family. I can only hope there are more "reduced" size recipes in our future.
    Looks good!

  5. I agree that it's great to make a dessert that you don't have to look at all week! Yours looks yummy...too bad it was a bit tart.

  6. I agree with you--it needed ice cream. I know my fruit was sweet and I wouldn't say my galette was tart, but it was missing something.

I too liked the size. We had people over for dinner and it was gone that same night.

  7. Your galette looks beautiful…and ice cream is the way I served mine, too! A perfect match!

  8. I love rustic pies too! I thought my berries were sweet and cut back on the sugar - mistake. It could have used a bit more. Makes for a good excuse to make another one. :)
